Laser Sensors Lab Group

The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) researches electronic and optical components, modules and systems based on compound semiconductors.

In the Laser Sensors Lab at FBH, headed by Prof. Bernd Sumpf, diode lasers and optical systems are especially designed and developed for sensors and analytics. This includes lasers with narrowband emission and wavelength-stabilised laser systems with emission wavelengths in the UVC to near-infrared spectral range.

One sensing application is Raman spectroscopy. Here, the developed diode lasers and systems enable a separation of Raman signals from disturbing background signals such as fluorescence. Additionally, diode lasers are also developed for non-linear frequency conversion or as seed lasers, e.g. to be applied in LIDAR systems for absorption spectroscopy.

The combination of this expertise and world-leading facilities at FBH provides the unique opportunity to cover the complete value chain from the development of diode lasers and light sources to measurement systems and applications in life sciences.

Current projects focus on areas including:

  • Dual-wavelength diode lasers for Raman spectroscopy

  • Microsystem-based external cavity diode lasers

  • Widely tunable high-power diode lasers, e.g. for hyper spectral imaging

  • Diode laser systems emitting in the blue and UV spectral range

  • Efficient high-power diode lasers as key part in medical diagnostics

  • Diode laser systems for measuring of water vapour under atmospheric conditions
