Humboldt University Berlin (HUB)

The Humboldt University of Berlin as part of the German Universities Excellence Initiative is one of the leading research universities of Germany with 33,000 students, 11,000 post-graduates, and 3,000 doctoral students.

The Elementary Exitations in Solids group of the Physics Department works on the physics and applications of novel semiconductor heterostructures and nanostructures. An important component of this work is the growth and materials science of III-V heterostructures, grown using gas-source molecular-beam epitaxy (GSMBE).

A primary focus of the group lies in the research and development of Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) for the short mid-infrared spectral range within the first atmospheric window (3-5 µm) and their integration into broadly tunable External Cavity spectrometers.

Further research interests include:

• Phosphide-based LEDs
• Self-organised Quantum Dots and Quantum Wires
• Micro-Hall Sensors
• Compliant Universal Substrates
• Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors
